I don't see a problem with "they" except that in some sentences when referring to a singular person it can sound wrong. So if possible I would just rephrase the sentence.

Language evolves from the words already in use, so if a new term needs to be established it should be based on "they". How about tey?

I wouldn't put a lot of effort into getting it transported.

I just use "they"
